Photo Print: NIGHT TRAM by Dragan M. Babovic

This photo was taken in a public place during a tram passing. It is part of big series of photos I call "Life between"...between 2 stations, 2 parts of life etc. I make portraits of anonymous persons. I experiencing the dirty windows of trams and buses as a canvas, the inner walls of church or monastery, movie, TV or computer screens and monitors. I'm making portraits of people who have a strong character, similar to frescoes, actors in the theater, or movies. In everyday faces of ordinary people I can recognize heroes from canvas of Leonardo, Vermeer, or Gerhard Richter. Also very important is where and how the man and what he was looking. I do not care for crisp, clear shapes without any noise. Just a contrary. Human face is specific map of human soul. I am trying to make portrait of inner essence of the subject, avoiding to make representative portraits that instead man show his power, social position and artificial beauty. So my portraits are not modeling or advertising. Although they are all painted on the street in a documentary way, they are more intimate, less documentary, more artistic.
